HEXA Project 2023

At VERDESEC, we believe that strong cybersecurity learning is built through a combination of guidance, exposure, and practical experience. With that belief, we organized HEXA Project 2023, a Cyber Security Camp designed to help students strengthen their cybersecurity skills through hands-on learning guided by professionals and industry practitioners. The camp’s stated aim was not only to build technical knowledge, but also to give students a stronger understanding of both cyber attacks and cyber defense in a more practical setting.

The camp was structured into two tracks, a Senior Camp and a Junior Camp. This structure allowed the program to cater to students at different levels, making it easier to introduce foundational topics to beginners while also exposing more advanced participants to broader cybersecurity concepts.

For the Junior Camp, the focus was on giving participants a strong starting point in practical security. The sessions covered Penetration Testing 101 and Your First Flag with Kali Linux, two beginner-friendly topics that helped students get their first exposure to offensive security concepts and hands-on lab work. These sessions were designed to make cybersecurity feel approachable, especially for students who were still early in their learning journey.

The Senior Camp introduced participants to broader and more advanced themes, including The First Step into Cyber Defense and Red Teaming 101. These sessions gave students a wider view of the cybersecurity field, showing that technical growth is not limited to one area alone. By combining offensive and defensive perspectives, the camp created a more balanced learning experience and helped participants better understand how different areas of cybersecurity connect in practice.

Another strength of the camp was its lineup of speakers and trainers. The program featured contributions from industry and community figures, including a regional cybersecurity system integrator for the cyber defense session, Mr Ali Radzali for Red Teaming 101, Mr Cheow Jia Jian for Penetration Testing 101, and members of VERDESEC for the Capturing Your First Flag with Kali Linux, and UnThreats for the First Step into Cyber Defense workshop. Bringing together practitioners with different backgrounds helped make the camp more grounded in real-world experience while giving students exposure to both industry and community perspectives.

HEXA Project 2023 reflected the kind of learning environment that VERDESEC values most: practical, guided, and community-driven. Events like this play an important role in helping students move from curiosity into active skill-building, while also strengthening the local cybersecurity community over time.
